Old Classic Album... Beach Boys : Surf's Up Released by Brother; 1971

Surf`s Up was released on 1971, how great this album, after both their fun-in-the-sun heyday of the early 60s and their masterpiece, Pet Sounds -- and one album removed from Brian Wilson's first "return" (the erratic Sunflower )-- the band appeared suddenly to be at a crossroads. Mike Love had yet to grab hold of the group's reins, but was exerting a much greater influence on their public persona via message songs like "Don't Go Near the Water" and the grating "Student Demonstration Time". Anyway... Beach Boys is the most ambitious music was being resuscitated from the five year-old Smile sessions.

Surf's Up album is practically defines flawed greatness, exotic folk-pop, manager Jack Rieley's devastating vocal on Brian's "A Day in the Life of a Tree", and Brian's own gorgeous "'Til I Die". Furthermore... the eclectic, relaxed sound of this album is reflected now a days in the work of Super Furry Animals, Sufjan Stevens, and Stereolab, but this is the roots.
